This was prior to the incoming industrial age.
The industrial age which saw the invention of engines and other important scientific discoveries in a materials technology, particularly metal made headways in ship design and construction. Boats and ships now had engines for propulsion and the hulls could now be made of metals. Thus was born the modern ship and boat building industry which is still very vibrant until the present.
Modern boats are made of aluminum which is now widely used as the main building material. As with all metals, aluminum reacts poorly to air and water. Oxidation is the nemesis of metals.
