Enjoy Ketchikan Salmon Fishing During The Summer

Many doctors will tell you that the heart healthy oils in fresh, wild caught salmon is good for you. However, some people balk at the price at the supermarket, which can be quite high. But if you charter a Ketchikan salmon fishing boat, you can catch your own while saving money and having a great experience you will not soon forget.

The city of Ketchikan is in the southern part of Alaska, and is situated near several streams and other waters that contain all five of the Pacific salmon species. This prime location had earned it the title of the Salmon Capital of the entire world. One visit and you will see why.

The state of Alaska takes the preservation of this species quite serious. They want to make sure the waters do not get overfished, so that none of the species are ever in any kind of danger. There are many nearby hatcheries to ensure the population is always strong, so the city is likely to remain the salmon capital for many years to come.

These species have annual journeys through the local area, so they are not in Ketchikan all year round. You can catch some fishes like halibut in the colder seasons, but if you want salmon, you will have to visit either in late spring or sometime in the summer months. Generally between May and late September is the best time.

Among the most prized species out of the five is the King, which can reach up to 50 pounds. It might feel like a small shark when it first tugs on your line. Many who go out on a charter to fish for it feel like it is an adventure just trying got land one. But 50 pounds means catching just one is enough to feed your family for days. If you are not quite that adventurous, the Silver or Cotto ones are a little easier to land, weight in at 20 pounds or less. Either way, you can use your own poles and bait, or use the ones that the crew will already have on board.

Each boat tour can hold multiple people, and they have many different tour lengths. The shortest is generally four hours, which gives you the morning or afternoon to go fishing, and the rest of the day to relax in the scenic local area. There are some that run all day though, depending on just how much you want to catch.

If you like to make new friends or just meet others from different areas or walks of life, then the public charters are for you. With a public one, you and your group share a boat with one or more other groups to get the boat full.

Since there are many Alaskan cruise ships in the area, your boat may have cruisers on board. But if you like your privacy and want one on one help from the crew, then you can go for a private charter instead.

If you are from out of town and live too far away to commute for your trip, you can book a package deal that includes lodging. There are many local motels and cabins available for rent in various sizes to suit your needs.
