Guides In Keeping Yourself Safe During An Alligator Tour
by Christine King
Alligators are crocodilian reptiles with adults mostly having a black or dark brown color with their undersides being white. There is no record for their average lifespan and they are only native to United States and China. They live in freshwater environments like swamps, lakes, rivers, wetlands, marshes and ponds and the holes they made increase plant diversity.
They improve the ecology also by feeding on the animals that could cause severe damage in these areas being grazed by muskrat and coypu like coastal wetlands. You can go to a Louisiana alligator tour to see these reptiles with the other animals. The following are a few guides to keep yourself safe while enjoying your trip of seeing them.
They are afraid of humans but feeding them with your food other than natural prey make them seek out people instead. So do not feed them and keep your food to yourself instead so they will not approach anyone and destroy their natural habits. This also applies for other animals around the area since they may learn to depend on humans.
Be careful at mating season, usually at summer and spring months, because they become edgy and do peculiar things. They leave their marked territories during this time only to find females, making it more frequent to see larger alligators where you normally will not. Just ignore them, give them space or leave them alone.
Keep your distance from them because they can move fast even when they seem lazy and slow when at their spot, lounging. You are very close when they lunge or hiss at you so you need at least a distance of sixty feet away from them. Never disturb their nest and their babies because the mom is always ready and nearby to protect.
Their habitats have areas with cool and refreshing water which is enticing for everyone to swim when riding on the boat. But if your feet, legs and arms cannot be seen when swimming then doing so is not advisable as alligators might be there. Stick to shallower and crystal clear waters instead because these areas are safer.
Be careful when fishing near their habitat as alligators would try to grab the hooked fish causing them to be caught with your line. Avoid areas with heavy vegetation and near the edge of water where they like to stay. Catching one with your line is very dangerous and not something you will want as you can get dragged down by them.
If you like to take your pet dogs while boating or fishing then keep them on a leash specially when disembarking the boat in these areas. This is for preventing them to run off alone particularly in mating seasons when they could become prey. It would also put yourself in danger when chasing them and you might not notice well your surroundings and disturb these animals.
Plan your trip to these places by booking in advance at a nearby hotel or cottage with rental boats available. Others have guided tours just for sightseeing the diverse habitat of these animals and enjoy the environment. Check in advance the reviews of previous customers of these tours.
