Different people enjoy doing different things with the free time they have available. Some like to spend hours riding the rides and attractions at theme parks. Others prefer something more relaxing. Anyone who wants to spend a few days exploring the beauty and history of north central Tennessee should take a visit to the Harpeth River Nashville State Parks. This body of water meanders leisurely through several counties and is a favorite with rural America historians and outdoor aficionados.

The linear park is a very popular destination for canoers and kayakers. There are also wonderful hiking trails for beginners and experienced hikers as well. You can choose to trek through forests or amazing fields of wildflowers. You can even take a walk to the bluffs to witness the panoramic valley views. Fishermen will love the chance to spend a few relaxing days fly fishing for bass, bream, catfish, bluegill, and other game fish.

People interested in American history will probably enjoy a visit to Montgomery Bell's Pattison Forge. This is where you will find the first full scale tunnel anyone built in this country. It's about three hundred feet long and was built to divert water. Slaves were used to make the opening in the limestone. The original forge not longer exists, but you can still enjoy the waterfall there.

People fascinated with ancient history should love touring the Mound Bottom, a one hundred acre archaeological site studying the tribal community that lived there more than a thousand years ago. You will see the Temple Mound where the tribal chieftain lived and conducted ceremonial rituals. The central mound is encircled by eleven smaller ones. Inside their confines the community lived, worked, prayed and traded goods.

Many visitors recommend taking the easy hike to Hidden Lake when you are in the area. There are some great views and the trip is easy and not too long. When you get to the top, you'll find a marble dance floor which is all that is left of a 1940s resort. As with many parts of the park, almost everything is left in its natural state. There are no bathrooms, railings, or sitting areas.

Newsom's Mill will be of interest to those interested in the early agrarian history of this country. Newsom's was a grist mill built in the eighteen fifties. At the time it was very important to the local economy. The structure still exists intact along with the wheel and shaft.

There is no biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, camping, or hunting allowed on the park premises. You can swim or wade around in the river, but there are no lifeguards or park personnel responsible for your safety. Parking and handicapped access is limited, and any vehicle larger than a small van will have difficulty handling the winding roads.

Harpeth River is a great place to spend a relaxing and interesting vacation. You can participate in formal guided tours or tour the sights on your own, whatever works best for you.
