Preparing For Your Kayak Harpeth River Trip

by Brian Price

A great outdoor experience cannot be made without some sort of experience that will include kayaking or canoeing down the river in the wilderness, just like the explorers of old did in this great nation. Rivers connected not only people with each other, but connected them to nature as well. A lot of untouched natural areas can only be reached by canoe or kayak. If you are planning a kayak Harpeth river trip then do read on.

Preparing a checklist is a practical thing to do, not only of what you need to bring materially, but how to prepare yourself emotionally and mentally as well. Use a checklist to list down things not only of what to pack but what to plan for as a well. A good checklist can never be underestimated in terms of helpfulness and value.

On top of your checklist is of course to choose where you want to go to. Definitely this is already done as you have chosen the Harpeth itself. Remember that the Harpeth is a big tributary of two Mississippi Watershed rivers, being the Cumberland and Ohio Rivers. Next will be to study the river itself in a more detailed fashion.

Identify the locations of where the whitewater areas on the Harpeth are. A majority will be located in the Little Harpeth, a tributary of this waterway. Always stay away from these whitewater areas and only tackle them if you are already an experienced kayaker. Do not just go to these places just for the heck of it, as it can be dangerous.

The Harpeth is a river that has great smooth sailing in general although it will meander quite a bit. Meandering means basically that it will twist and turn quite a bit throughout its course. These turns will all have differing speeds and currents and so it is best to ask about them and study them prior to your journey.

The acquisition of a good guide is definitely something that you should put on your list. Get a seasoned guide who has impeccable safety records. This will be a bit more expensive but you can never put a price on safety. Ask on local forums and such for the best guide around. Also interview your prospective guides thoroughly.

Preparing and gearing up for the trip is a fun thing to do in terms of shopping and stuff. However, it can become a bit expensive if you are a first timer. Ask again from more experienced kayakers on what to bring and what not to. The best part also is that you do not have to run around too much as most can be bought online and delivered to you at your door.

And before you do go, sit down with your group and have a long discussion on what you hope to accomplish, do or enjoy. Discuss also how long you want the trip to be, the shorter the better, for these kind of trips can be exhausting. A two to three day trip should suffice for you.
