Unique Content Article: A California Racing Horse Stable

A California Racing Horse Stable

by Jeffrey Ross

The life of a race horse, its trainer, its caretakers, and its owners is special. Those who are lucky enough to have experienced the 'backstretch' remember it fondly; some never leave it. Life for a horse in a California racing horse stable can be pretty good, as well as for the cast of dedicated people who orbit around it.

The long barns shelter the stalls, where the thoroughbreds spend about twenty-three hours a day. In front of the stalls is a dirt aisle that goes completely around the double row of stall, which stand back to back; the barn roof covers the aisle, called a shedrow. This dirt circle is used to walk the horses who are not going to the track for a gallop or a workout, or to cool out the ones who have been exercised. There is also room to store feed, hay, and straw, as well as all the gear needed to do the work.

A stall is big and square, with a front door that can be left open, with a webbing to keep the horse in, or closed by swinging the bottom half-door shut. The top half is only shut when the weather is bad, rare in California, or if the horse needs to be totally confined. A deep layer of straw, called bedding, makes a comfortable place to lie down and cushions the horse's feet and legs.

Stalls are furnished with a water bucket, a feed tub, and a screweye in the wall in case the animal needs to be tied up, for grooming or tacking (putting the bridle and saddle on). The wide front door lets the animal have a good view of the outside world. It's a great sight to see a long row of elegant heads peeking out at feeding time or if there is some commotion going on outside.

No one is allowed on the backstretch unless they have been granted a license by the racing association. Owners, trainers, grooms, exercise riders, farriers, jockeys, agents, and contracted hay and feed dealers have entry. Only certain vets can work the barn area. This isolation makes the backstretch a self-contained community.

The center of everything is the horses. Their care and training is the reason for all backstretch activity, and the hope of their success keeps all the people on their toes. In California, most of the animals are well-bred and gorgeous. Grooms fall in love with their charges; in fact, many feel like the horses are more theirs than the property of the people who actually own them.

The races are exciting, but it's the early mornings on the backstretch, the regular routine of keeping the horses fit, well, and happy, and the comaraderie among racetrackers that means the most. Many longtime racetrackers don't even bet. It's a way of life that not many people know, deeply engrossing and compelling.

It's an exacting task, racing horses. They are fed three or four times a day, exercised at least once, bathed after exercise, brushed, and given special attention on race days. They need shoes, dental care, veterinarian care, special rubs and bandages for their legs, and lots of love. They like to be led out and allowed to graze. Being the sole support of a racehorse is no part-time job. But year after year, the backstretch is filled with dedicated people who don't want to be anywhere else.
