A marathon is one of those things that a lot of people would love to try, but they are afraid they are not in good enough shape to do so. Trying to run 13.1 miles without proper training is a bad idea. If you know you cannot run or jog that far, you can always walk. Lots of people, especially those with kids, walk the entire course. If you would rather get in better shape though, there are several local groups you can join.

Each group has a certain pace that they set, and you can join if you are able to meet that pace. With each session, you practice and learn to improve your gait and method so that your pace improves. Once it does improve, you may be able to join the next fastest group. If you plan to walk the marathon, there is a group for that as well to join.

There are two sessions that you can join, depending on what time of year it is. One starts in the summer and goes into the fall, while the other starts in winter and goes into the spring. This is a commitment, so you know you will see results with so many weeks and months of sessions.

Even after the marathon, most people keep going to the group sessions. Some are training for the next year, or perhaps for another marathon that is coming up. Some just want to keep feeling healthy and strong. You may also have made some really great friends, and want to keep seeing them each week while you jog.

There are many benefits beyond just getting into marathon shape when you join any groups. Some people make friends for life and become more confident when it comes to everyday challenges due to feeling and looking better. For many, these marathons become more of a practice rather than a hobby, and can change your life forever if you get into a group to prepare.
